For many Americans it’s an easy decision to buy good pet food, leashes and litter, and take their pets to the veterinarian. But for others it’s a constant choice between providing for themselves and their children, or the animals they love. They struggle every day to make ends meet. These people didn’t intend to add a dog or cat to their household, but they have big hearts despite their small wallets!
AID a Pet helps both the owner and their pet. By providing nutritious pet food and veterinary assistance the animal thrives. And for the pet owner, AID a Pet offers one less worry for people who often go from one daily crisis to another. |
PEOPLE WE'VE HELPED
Over the years, AID a pet has helped many people and their pets in the greater Hartford community. These are just a few of our stories.
SHERRY & KITTENSIf cats aren’t spayed they can reproduce at an alarming rate, in fact a cat can get pregnant just 2 weeks after having kittens! That’s what happened to Patches. She had a litter, then her owner moved out of (or got evicted from) her apartment and the homeless cat was pregnant again. That’s when Sherry stepped in. She took in Patches and with AID a Pet’s help got her spayed and found responsible homes for Patches last set of kittens! One of the kittens is pictured here.

EFRAIN & GOYAEfrian and his young, affectionate pitbull, Goya were inseparable. And Efrian took excellent care of his puppy until one day Goya’s tail was crushed by a cellar door. Efrain was frantic and went to three veteranarians only to learn that what they would charge to fix Goya was well over his limited means. That’s when AID a Pet stepped in and made arrangements with the East Hartford Animal Clinic to amputate part of Goya’s tail and make him well again. Since Efrain doesn’t own a car and buses don’t allow dogs most dogs, Efrain walked and sometimes carried Goya to every vet appointment. He made the trek of almost 2 miles regardless of the weather, to make sure his best friend was fully recovered.

JEFF & HIS DOGSFor Jeff, AID a Pet is a stop gap to better times when he will be able to afford food and supplies for the family's dogs. Right now, he and his brother both work but they are dealing with financial issues while caring for their disabled mother. But this is a family who loves their dogs. They saved a lab when someone tossed him out of a truck, and their terrier was abandoned at a convenience store. The dog hung around the store for a month and then finally jumped into Jeff's mother's car and found his forever home. AID a Pet was able to give the terrier a brand new, cozy bed to snuggle into.

A MAN WITH HIS SMILING PITBULLAlthough this man struggles to have a permanent home and food for himself, he felt he had to rescue this pitbull who was chained day and night in a cellar. The man came to AID a Pet for basic supplies.. a leash, a dog bed, and food. It was clear to all the volunteers that this pit adored the man who rescued him. Caring for the dog is helping the man care more for himself as well.

Regina MartinThis young woman didn’t plan to own a dog, but an elderly neighbor passed away and no one in the family could take care of her dog. Despite the expense of dog food and medicine for the dog, this young woman fell in love with the little terrier and has given him a wonderful home. She especially appreciates the nutritious, high quality food AID a Pet is able to provide.

OCTAVIO & CHINAOctavio’s roommate moved out and abandoned this sweet and trusting dog, China. He never returned for the dog or inquired about her. So Octavio, who had come to love the little shih tzu, decided he would keep and care for China. As a bus driver, Octavia was sometimes short on funds for good food for China so AID a Pet was an important resource for him. And then the worst happened. Octavio found out that the little dog he had come to love had a cancerous tumor on her side. He wanted badly to save her life but the cost of surgery was beyond his limited means. That’s when Aid a Pet stepped in and had a campaign to raise funds for China and made a surgery appointment for her at a clinic. Today China is cancer free, very well and greets Octavio at the end of every work day with happiness.

SUSAN & LADYSusan has a special fondness for pit bulls. She says she finds them on the streets, but more than likely they find her because they sense a kind heart. Susan has rescued and found homes for many dogs, especially among veterans who sometimes need the unconditional love a dog gives, when they return home from service and face new challenges. Lady is a dog Susan could never give up because the two are so bonded. In the city, there are often loud noises and sometimes even gunshots and Lady is quick to cover and guard Susan. Susan is also a very responsible dog owner even though her funds are limited. So AID a Pet helped Susan get Lady spayed at a Spay/Neuter Clinic. And because of the excellent care Susan gave Lady (including massages, and vitamin E rubs) Lady was fit as a fiddle in record time.

ANNAWith seven cats of her own, as well as feeding feral cats, Anna comes to every AID a Pet distribution for cat food and litter. Like many people in Frog Hollow Anna doesn't own or drive a car, but fortunately she has friends who do. So one of her friends, who has a van, offers Anna and others a ride to the Pet Pantry with plenty of room for the heavy food and litter they leave with for their animals.
